After two years of a global pandemic, even the spaces and designs created as a response need to be updated.
Working with the Bar Director at Quality Branded, and piggy-backing off the existing design by GRT Architects, we were tasked with renewing up the interior spaces in unique and surprising ways.
Each dining space focuses on an animal to transform into a brightly colored hidden oasis in Midtown– Cheetah, Ostrich, Flamingo, Tiger, Stork, Monkey, and more greet you as you pull back the curtain and enter.
Lever House, NYC
Handwerk had the opportunity to design the exterior bar and dining area of the iconic Casa Lever restaurant, in NYC’s historic Lever House building. The cherrywood bar is modular and can be moved for winter months. Comfortable banquette seating, tall planters and generous umbrellas create a Hamptons- esque dining experience.

A street-level bar near Times Square that references both the existing tectonic history and current programming of the neighborhood.
During the day passers-by stop in for a drink and a snack while considering their next moves. At night, ticket-holders anticipate their show over drinks and conversation.
With a quick schedule, the idea is to balance the look and feel of the hand made component with the Big City. The bright but warm glow of the lights echoes the stage performances viewed throughout the neighborhood.

Jacob’s Pickles is an institution in NYC’s Upper West Side. Handwerk took the brand’s down home aesthetic and applied it to JP’s market stall in the new Moynihan train station. A custom mosaic tile sign, rustic wood and glowing light boxes provide plenty of texture to bring people over to the stall.

The second location of a family-owned and community-focused ice cream shop based in Harlem.
The design goal was to create a warm and soft background for ice cream and conversation.
Out of site, in the basement, is the ice cream production facility we designed to supply the ground level scoop shop.
We cannot say enough about how great their flavors are! Stop by and be amazed!

2016-2017
Design, fabrication, and installation of art features for the newly-opened location of Manhattan restaurant Quality Italian in Denver, Colorado.
The concept centers around art from an Italian palazzo, along with highlighting the beauty hidden in every day objects.
In the main dining room we designed and created a large wall installation inspired by traditional heraldic elements crossed with a Louise Nevelson sculpture. In the other dining room, we filled architectural niches with vintage portraiture inspired by recipes handed down from one generation to the next.

Working with the interior design firm AvroKO and the capable team at Quality Branded, we designed, fabricated, and styled some of the art at the French-inspired-steakhouse Quality Bistro.
Handmade, painted, carved, digitally altered, , stretched, fired, found, assembled, wrapped, unwrapped– the curated walls changed day to day as the process played out organically as a dialogue among all parties.
West Village, NYC
Arthur’s Tavern is a historic jazz bar located in NYC’s West Village. Handwerk refreshed the space, keeping the classic old New York feel by designing an antique style back bar and sourcing vintage lights. Comfortable seating and plenty of indirect light keep people in their seats for hours.

A new bar inside an existing restaurant, specializing in smoked spirits, cocktails, and small bites.
For this project we designed the functional bar, graphics, signage, styling, and layout.
The main back bar is made of wood and a variety of glass and mesh finishes. Each compartment is designed to fit certain bottles and stemware that the bar requires.
Some of the wood in this double height space is charred in the Japanese method of sho sugi ban.
